Born Charlaine Edith Karalusas, Janet Pilgrim was a pseudonym reportedly chosen by Hugh Hefner for a giggle at sexual Puritanism. The caption under her first Playmate of the Month photo in 1955 read as follows:

“We found Miss July in our own circulation department, processing subscriptions, renewals, and back copy orders. Her name is Janet Pilgrim and she’s as efficient as she is good looking.”

The man behind her is reportedly Mr. Hefner himself.
